Oral Probiotics

Supporting a Healthy Oral Microbiome

Your mouth has its own microbiome — a community of bacteria that live on the teeth, tongue, gums, cheeks, and throat. Some bacteria are helpful and protective…while others contribute to cavities, gum inflammation, and bad breath.

What Are Oral Probiotics?

Oral probiotics are supplements that introduce beneficial bacteria specifically designed to live in the mouth (not the stomach). The goal isn’t to “kill all bacteria,” but rather to support a healthier balance so the helpful species thrive and the harmful ones have less opportunity to dominate.

Most oral probiotics come as dissolvable lozenges that are used daily, allowing the beneficial bacteria to gently colonize the mouth over time.

Who Might Benefit — and How to Use Them

Oral probiotics may be helpful for people who experience:

  • frequent cavities

  • gum inflammation or bleeding

  • chronic bad breath

  • dry mouth

  • changes in oral bacteria after antibiotics

  • an interest in supporting the oral microbiome naturally

They are usually taken once or twice daily as a slow-dissolving lozenge, ideally after brushing — and without rinsing right away. Like most wellness tools, consistency over time matters.

A Supportive Addition to Your Oral Wellness Plan

It’s important to remember that oral probiotics do not replace brushing, flossing, or professional dental care. Instead, they can be a supportive addition to an overall oral wellness plan — especially when guided by your dentist and, when appropriate, saliva testing.
